NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner and Member for Bega Andrew Constance announced the $170.6 million hospital’s completion on Tuesday.
When Did New Bega Hospital Open?
The New Beginnings Hospital opened in September of 2014. The hospital is a state of the art facility that provides care for the community. The hospital has been a vital part of the community since it opened.
Claire Lupton is researching and writing a history of the Old Bega Hospital, which is still in its early stages of completion as of March 2021. The site was first chosen as the location of a hospital in 1886, following the survey of Bega in 1854 and subsequent settlement of the town. Following an outbreak of smallpox in 1876, a discussion about public hospitals began. The Old Bega Hospital was repaired for its 100th anniversary in 1988 as a result of a major community effort supported by funding for the Australian Bicentenary. In May 2004, the main building of the hospital caught fire. Despite the fact that there is no clear cause of the fire, it appears that either the electrical system or the heater was the source of the fire. A fire severely damaged the Old Bega Hospital in 2004. Since then, the Trust has been working to restore the Hospital and grounds. This building is listed on the Australian Institute of Architects Register of significant architecture in New South Wales (as a dairy farm and former district hospital).
New Hospital Brings Much Needed Relief To Bega
In 1957, when a new hospital opened, the old Bega hospital ceased to be the primary health facility for Bega. Over the course of over 50 years, the Bega community has benefited from a new hospital built close to the town center. In 2016, South East Regional Hospital was built to serve the region from Mallacoota to Batemans Bay.
