At least 150 patients from MD Anderson Cancer Center were evacuated Tuesday night after a major power outage caused by a fire in an electrical substation. The fire caused a total loss of power to the hospital, which is located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. The hospital was forced to rely on backup generators, but they were not enough to keep the elevators and air conditioning running. Patients were evacuated to other hospitals, including Memorial Hermann and Baylor College of Medicine, as well as to hotels and homes of family and friends. MD Anderson is one of the world’s leading cancer centers, and the evacuation is a major disruption to its operations. The hospital is currently working to get back up and running, and it is not clear when all of its patients will be able to return.
